The Facts About Stomach Swelling
Stomach swelling is a common condition, with the most frequent cause being overeating. Aside from overeating there are several conditions that may cause your stomach to swell, including pregnancy, premenstrual syndrome, weight gain, and swallowing air.
Another cause of having the feeling of stomach swelling is when there is gas in the intestines. A variety of different foods can cause a buildup of gas in the intestines. If you eat fibrous foods such as fruits and vegetables, beans it can cause gas in the intestines. Dairy products may also bring on this problem in people that are lactose intolerant.
Although most causes of stomach swelling are benign, on occasion it can indicate another problem. Stomach swelling may be caused by a buildup of fluids in the stomach. Some additional causes for swelling in the stomach are Irritable Bowel Syndrome, ovarian cysts, a bowel obstruction, and uterine fibroids.
In most cases medical intervention is not necessary when someone has stomach swelling. If the cause of the swelling is due to overeating, this feeling should pass after a couple of hours when the food has digested. To avoid stomach swelling because of overeating all that is necessary is to ensure that you eat in moderation, and stop eating before you fell full.
If you are having problems with swallowing air unconsciously, you can avoid this problem by being more aware of how you eat so that you are getting less air into your stomach. The best ways to keep from getting too much air into your stomach is to eat slowly, try and avoid carbonated drinks, drinking with a straw, or chewing gum. With a few preventative measures you can solve your problem with stomach swelling, if it is due to swallowing air.
If your problem with stomach swelling is being caused by indigestion, you may want to change your diet and try avoiding dairy products. If a change in diet does not ease your discomfort, you will want to consult with your healthcare provider.
Another condition that leads to stomach swelling is Irritable Bowel Syndrome. To remedy this problem you can try to increase the fiber in your diet, as well as avoid stress as much as possible. Stress does have a way of bringing on this condition; along with the stomach swelling that can accompany it.
If the stomach swelling isn’t due to one of the above causes, you will want to get an evaluation from your doctor to find out what the underlying cause is so that the condition can be treated. In addition to getting an evaluation to get your condition diagnosed, you will also want to contact your doctor if you are experiencing stomach swelling that gets worse, you are also having other unexplained symptoms, or your stomach is tender when you touch it.
When you visit your doctor, he or she will perform a physical examination, as well as ask you questions about the history of your problem, such as when it first began, and when do you have the most problems with it. You doctor will also want to know if there are any other symptoms that occur at the same time is the stomach swelling, such as vomiting or diarrhea.
To help your doctor in evaluating your condition you may have to have a CT scan on your stomach or an MRI. With this your doctor will get a better idea of what is going on with your stomach and be able to make an accurate diagnosis.
Remember, although stomach swelling can be harmless and easily treated at home, if your have other symptoms, or the condition worsens, contact your doctor as soon as possible, as it could indicate a serious medical problem.
